Objectif général

A. The project aimed to provide for the first time a comprehensive survey and cartographic representation of the carbon content of the forests of the DR Congo using the innovative LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technique, among others, and to make it available to all potential REDD+ stakeholders. B. A large-scale REDD+ model project in the "Lac Tumba Landscape" is to further develop various forest protection measures, whose effectiveness, efficiency and feasibility can be demonstrated by using the carbon data collected, and thus serve as a model for future REDD+ projects in the DR Congo.
Objectif spécifique
A 1: The results of a representative LIDAR survey of the most important forest types and forest degradation stages in the DR Congo, in combination with intensive ground truthing and satellite data, will be used to develop a data basis for biomass distribution and carbon content with a precision and reliability that has not been available up to now. A 2: This data basis on the carbon content of forests will be made generally accessible in the form of a "National Carbon Map". A 3: The technical and personnel capacities necessary for the collection and updating of the data, as well as for their availability and practical use, will be created in the DR Congo. B 1: In the REDD+ model project Lac Tumba, this data basis will be used for REDD+-oriented land use planning, for the long-term generation of carbon payments through REDD+ measures and ultimately to promote forest conservation. B 2: The various forest conservation measures will be implemented on a pilot basis in cooperation with all relevant stakeholders and their effectiveness, efficiency and feasibility, as well as their economic and ecological sustainability will be reviewed, quantified and optimised. B 3: Based on the measured effects of the measures, carbon accounting structures will be developed and avoided emissions are expected to be valued after the end of the project via a national fund or the voluntary market for sustainable project continuation. B 4: Structures for participatory project implementation and stakeholder benefit sharing are being developed and are to be used in future for the implementation of carbon payments. A and B: The project results are fed directly into the national REDD+ process.
